Handbill/Ticket Order Form for the 1963 Newport Folk Festival.
n.p.: Newport Folk Festival, 1963.
Single legal-size sheet folded to make a leaflet. The handbill lists three appearances by Bob Dylan. These were Dylan's historic first appearances at the Newport Folk Festival where his performances with veterans such as Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, John Lee Hooker, Maybelle Carter, and Doc Watson firmly established his status as a major up-and-coming artist. Superb association copy as this was singer-songwriter and artist Eric Von Schmidt's personal copy. Von Schmidt did the cover design for the program for the 1963 Newport Folk Festival, and among many other things, designed the famous poster for Dylan's 1965 tour with Joan Baez, arguably the most famous and controversial Dylan poster. Dylan suppressed the poster because he didn't like the way he looked in it, nevertheless the image has come to be regarded as one of the most iconic from the early part of Dylan's career. It was used to illustrate the dust jacket of Positively 4th Street by David Hajdu and has been reproduced innumerable times in various books about the sixties folk music scene. Pin holes to the corners and a few barely perceptible ones to the edges, minute nick to one corner, very good. A splendid association copy of a very scarce, early Dylan item from a seminal event in the evolution of his career. We've never encountered this piece before---it's much scarcer than the program for this festival. Included is a letter of provenance from rock impresario Bill Graham's archive.
