| SALINGER, J. D. Revealing Typed Letter Signed from J. D. Salinger detailing his thoughts about homeopathy, astrology, nutrition, and films. n.p.:n.p., [1981]. March 28, 1981. Four single-spaced pages on three 8vo sheets to Salinger's friend and sometimes houseguest, Mary Janet Eagleson. In part: "You are an astrologically sound, upstanding, finely ruminative, discreetly voluble, lissome, redheaded House-Guest unquestionably possesses [sic] of reasonably true grit. Your only fault, as I see it, is that you failed abjectly, in the little thank-you note your mother presumably insisted you write, to let your concerned host know if you have in fact been pooping better, what with the pressure on Point 36 on the Stomach Meridian. (You alluded genteely to something like a general rise in Bodily Tone, but we---meaning the entire medical staff at Ste. Rosie's General---we have our justly-renowned punctilious charts and records to maintain.)" Salinger goes on to talk about the diet recommendations he made to the recipient's brother: "I'm sure, yes (yes again), that Tim found our plaintive appeal for Better Food depressing. I was afraid of that. It is depressing, of course, from his super-solitary point of view. We're asking him to give up/quit/drop his few intimate and reliable daily pals, mates---the convivial and comforting pizza and Coke, the best of makeshift climaxes in this seedy world: the sugar-loaded Archie-Bunker Twinkie. Still, in his own way, Tim must want to live, or must at least not want to expire ignominiously, wretchedly, in his mother's house, possibly with reruns of The Dating Game on the TV screen." After a lengthy discussion of his successful use of homeopathic powders to heal his knee, Salinger turns to the subject of movies: "I do remember that early Deneuve movie. I like her. Haven't seen TESS yet. Wouldn't doubt your Polanski-Tate theory is correct. I don't think too much of his mind or taste or direction, really, and I don't much like the looks of the Kinsky kid [i.e. Nastassja Kinsky], but can imagine TESS might well be visually arresting, since England (rural England) itself is, and practically any movie director would at least know that. I saw ALTERED STATES which I thought insufferably dopey and special-effects-y and noisy. Also saw THE POSTMAN ALWAYS [RINGS TWICE], etc., because the wild one I was with thought it might be as well to have a look at it. In a way, it was. It was as claptrappy as the original version and the book, but I thought the King Kong girl, Jessica Lange, was good in it. Handn't expected her to be. I expected Nicholson to be Nicholson, and he was. He really wasn't watchable, but she was. A bum movie, though, full of shadows and Authentic Atmosphere and absolutely nothing." Salinger goes on to discuss, fasting, chronic constipation, warns against sunburn, and more. Signed "Love Jerry." He then adds a lengthy postscript on contact lenses versus glasses signed in type "Dr. Bones." A superb, substantive letter with Salinger's detailed, first-person perspective on his interests and obsessions that have been discussed by others in various memoirs. Interestingly, despite his own unpleasant experiences with Hollywood, this letter shows that Salinger is actively engaged in films and popular culture---and since he never published criticism during his career, his trenchant remarks here provide us with his previously unknown voice as a reviewer. The original mailing envelope is present, as is a copy of Eagleson's letter to him that raises some of the issues Salinger addresses. Fine. SKB-13652 | |
