| McLUHAN, Marshall. 8 letters (6 ALS and 2 TLS) from Marshall McLuhan to author and critic, Gilbert Seldes. n.p.:n.p., [1957]. Altogether 14 pages, mostly quarto. Toronto, 1957-1965. The letters are rife with meaningful content relating to McLuhan's research into communication and the effects of technology. He shares his thoughts with Seldes who, apparently, was doing similar work: "In the first pages of Explorations No. 8 I analyze why idea protection is impossible in legalistic terms at present. America is the fullest expression of the uninhibited play of the print medium with all its subliminal configurations. We are now erasing most of these patterns via the subliminal acceptance of electronic forms (telegraph and after). My approach is here, that the medium is, in the long run, the message, and has power to impose its assumptions on sense and sensibility. This is true of languages as media as much as of technological media as new languages." Later, McLuhan sends an update about this same research topic: "Have got a grant for 2-year personal project (from Federal Office of Education) to produce means of Understanding Media. Obviously we must confer and collaborate." McLuhan continues by suggesting that he participate in Seldes' seminars, and states: "I am quite sure Gilbert that communications will become the deportment of inter-relation in the entire campus world, also relating in-school and out-of-school experience on a very large scale indeed." McLuhan goes on to say: "I want to talk to you about many things. I've got to devise a whole new approach to media testing and I think I see how to do it" and mentions that he has "So much to talk about," and suggests that he present The Gutenberg Era as a series of public lectures, adding: "I am aware that the electronic age can never put up with the subliminal aspects of anything. The Gutenberg age, in fact ever since the phonetic alphabet [all-for-a-bit as Joyce called it] was mainly subliminal in its life because technology of print encouraged us to deal with one thing at a time, one meaning at a time, one level of consciousness at a time." In 1961 McLuhan turned the theories discussed in these letters into the book Gutenberg Galaxy. Substantive letters from one of the most influential intellectuals of the era. The lot includes the carbons of 2 letters from Seldes: SKB-15164 | |

| [ART] MOORE, Daniel. Autograph Letter Signed with drawing to Dave Haselwood of Auerhahn Press. n.p.:n.p., [1966]. 2 pages on one large quarto sheet. Boston, no date but ca. 1965. An amazing, densely-packed letter that is part surreal, occult, poetic rant and part informative letter. Moore's wide-ranging observations cover everything from the state of the strife-filled world, to America's destiny and the various "Darker Spirits" and "shaman-spirts" whose forces are at play. He goes on to compare San Francisco, Boston, and LA, discusses the work of John Wieners, talks about his own book Dawn Visions for which he is doing hand-painted covers, asks Haselwood to send him copies of Lami and Destroyed Works, mentions his travels to "places Buddha treads and Christ lays down and gives from his heart jets of Saturnian sperm," and much more. In the top corner Moore has done a color drawing of a human-faced bird on a perch with an egg and a swastika clutched in its claw. Some light sepia staining, creased where originally folded in fourths to make a small packet with a short tear along one fold, but thoroughly presentable. A wonderful letter very much reflective of Moore's interests and poetic ability. SKB-14633 | |
